“Never change a running horse” is an old English saying. Well, we believe more in Georg Christoph Lichtenberg’s maxim, who once said more than 200 years ago:  “I don’t know whether it is getting any better if it becomes different. But it has to become different if it should be any better.” Since anything can always be improved as there is no such thing as perfection, we decided to create for you a brand new myGATC order system. And, on top, we will change our service portfolio starting 21 January, 2011.

Don’t be frightened. Actually, we made things easier. In the past, you had to know beforehand what article you planned to order. Now, you can order without knowing anything about our services. We will lead you through the order process in very logical steps. First you decide how to send your samples (in tubes or plates), then what you will provide (plasmids, PCR fragments, BAC, PAC, cosmids or ready-to-load reactions), and whether your delivered samples need purification or not. We have created a common spreadsheet, similar to an Excel table, in which you will define your sequencing reactions. You can even drag and drop barcodes visually into your order spreadsheet.

However, we agree that any change requires some learning in the beginning. To keep that to a minimum, we prepared a trailer to guide you through the new order process and set up a sneak preview so that you can explore the new system quickly and at your convenience.

The service portfolio required some modernization, too. There are some new services and some which did not make it to 2011. You can now send us BAC, PAC, cosmids or ready-to-load reactions in full or half 96 well plates. However, service articles BigRun (in tubes), SequenceYourself (in tubes), the GenomeRun and the complete range of primer walking services had to go. RIP. Nevertheless, if you are just planning a primer walking project – before you get annoyed please get in touch with us. We’ll find a solution.

We managed to decrease the required volume of DNA and custom primers from 30µl to 20µl. This will still be sufficient for up to eight reactions. However, we had to decrease the storage time of DNA and primers you provide from four weeks to five working days once the order is completed.

Here are the changes in an overview:

OLD NEW (starting January 21, 2011)
Required volume of DNA and custom primer: 30µl Required volume of DNA and custom primer: 20µl
  Single read sequencing in tubes
Run24
Run24Barcode
Run24Supreme
Single reads of plasmids or PCR fragments delivered in 1.5 ml tubes, with or without prepaid barcode labels, re-runs with different protocols and chemistries (when required)

  Single read sequencing in plates
96 well sequencing
48 well sequencing
Run24Plate
Single reads of plasmids, PCR fragments, BAC, PAC, cosmids and ready-to-load reactions delivered in 96 well plates, full plates or half plates, with on or more primers, with or without prepaid barcode labels

Primer Walking on request

BigRun (in tubes), GenomeRun (in tubes), SequenceYourself (in tubes) Services withdrawn

Storage of DNA & custom primers provided by customer:
4 weeks
Storage of DNA & custom primers provided by customer:
5 working days from order completion

Storage of custom primers synthesized by GATC:
1 year
Storage of custom primers synthesized by GATC:
1 year

We continue to update myGATC 2011 during the year. Help us to develop innovative solutions that will make your lab life a bit easier. Please discuss with us your ideas, suggestions and criticism right here on the GATCBlog.

Jochen Schäfer

nothing against improvements, so it would be nice, if some things could be improved in the new interface. for example, it is not very convenient, that it's not possible to see names of probes and primers in orders which are not completed. and it is angrying as well, that in order to see names of probes in completed watchboxes one needs to click on the job number (takes hella lot of time, if one is looking for an old sequence). job number is a totally useless information for a customer, i can't see the reason why it needs to be shown to a customer at all. best wishes

Dear Elena, Thanks very much for your feedback. You are absolutely right. DNA and primer names were indeed not shown. We corrected that immediately. They are now displayed again for all open and completed orders. Thanks again! Best wishes,   Jochen Schäfer

I think it be a nice idea to see how many reactions are still left for a certain custom primer, for example if I hover the mouse over a primer name in the drop down list or shown in brackets after the primer name

comment on changes

Dear folks at GATC, while I appreciate your changes to the required sample volume, I could not more disagree with the change in custom DNA and primer storage times. Just one example: When people do mutagenesis, they will have a high number of samples, some of which will not be positive - to figure that out, an initial sequencing with one primer is needed. Once the positives are known, these will have to be sequenced completely. So it would be good to have the same DNA still in your sequencing lab. However, it completely eliminates any flexibility if I have to go through my initial sequencing results they day they are ready to not risk to have to send it all over again. For primers, a longer storage time than 4 weeks would be even better, but I appreciate that you can't store everything forever. Would be good if one could decide which samples/primers to store and which not. Looking forward to your answer, best regards, Frank

@ Marko: Thank you very much for your great suggestion. We will definitely consider your idea for the next upgrade. However, we cannot promise you anything yet. It kind of depends on the resources. @ Frank: Thank you for your request. Regarding the storage time of customer template and primer we decided to shrink the time due to different reasons. One of the reason was that we could not guarantee for the quality of the template and primer during a period of 4 weeks. I understand your request for re-using templates and primer for a longer period. What I can offer you is to find an individual solution for your needs. Please get in contact with our technical support team. With kind regards Jochen
