London klingt nach königlichen Hoheiten, Regenwetter und nachmittäglichen Teestunden. Aber London klingt auch nach Wissenschaft – die Stadt beherbergt das University College London, in dessen Department of Women’s Cancer die Fäden für ein wegweisendes Projekt zur Bekämpfung von Brust- und Eierstockkrebs zusammen laufen. Und wir forschen mit!

Einer für alle und alle für einen

Anfang November fand in London das Kick-Off  Meeting für das EpiFemCare Projekt statt. Das Projekt wird teilweise von der Europäischen Kommission gefördert und läuft über eine Dauer von 3,5 Jahren.

Und was die Musketiere können, können auch Wissenschaftler: 6 verschiedene Partner aus ganz Europa werden gemeinsam unter der Flagge EpiFemCare einen diagnostischen Test zur frühzeitigen Erkennung von Brust- und Eierstockkrebs entwickeln. Die GATC Biotech übernimmt dabei die Bearbeitung der Proben in unserem ISO 17025 akkreditierten Genome & Diagnostic Centre.

Jährlich erkranken rund 300.000 Frauen in Europa an Brust- oder Eierstockkrebs und meist werden diese Krebsarten viel zu spät erkannt. Bisherige Methoden zur Krebserkennung sollen durch diesen Test ersetzt werden mit dem Ziel, eine klare Frühdiagnose stellen zu können und die Patientenversorgung zu verbessern. Ein wegweisende Aufgabe und wir sind stolz, einen aktiven Beitrag dazu leisten zu können!

Das Line-Up

Mit dabei sind die Univerzita Karlova aus Prag, die Ludwig Maximilians Universität aus München, Genedata AG aus Basel, EuramLimited aus Lincoln, das University College London und wir, die GATC Biotech AG aus Konstanz.

Nun tummeln wir uns mit den 5 Projektpartnern unter einem gemeinsamen Logo und werden in regelmäßigen Abständen von der Entwicklung des Projekts berichten Bis 2016 wartet ein großes Stück Arbeit auf uns, aber wir sind uns alle einig: das ist es wert!

GATC Biotech conducts research to detect cancer in women

London – besides the Queen, the rain and a nice cup of tea, the British capital has a lot more to offer.

Kicking it off in London in November with 5 partners from 5 European countries, the Department of Women’s Cancer of the University College London has coordinated the research project EpiFemCare to develop a test for the early detection of cancer in women and their personalised treatment. And we are a research partner from the very first minute!

All for one and one for all

GATC Biotech will take over the sample processing which will be done in our ISO 17025 certified Genome & Diagnostic Centre.

The research project combines the best clinical, scientific and industrial expertise out there to develop and test new methods for screening, diagnosing and personalising treatment of breast and ovarian cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the EU: more than 300,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and a woman dies every 6 minutes from this disease. Ovarian cancer, whilst far less common than breast cancer, is often diagnosed when the disease is at an advanced stage and has spread to other areas of the body resulting in poor prognosis. More than 60% of ovarian cancer patients die within the first 5 years after diagnosis.

The Line-Up

Collaborators include Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic), Ludwig Maximilians University (Munich, Germany), Genedata AG (Basel, Switzerland), EuramLimited (Lincoln, Great Britain), the UCL in London, and us, GATC Biotech from Konstanz.

There is a lot of work to be done till 2016 but we’re all sure: it’s worth it!

All GATC Biotech Sanger sequencing laboratories of Düsseldorf, London and Constance are now consolidated to the new European Custom Sequencing Centre in Cologne.

These improvements in logistics and production allow us to extend our sequencing capacities with even faster delivery times and highly competitive prices.

In Constance, GATC Biotech’s headquarters, we are building up the European Genome and Diagnostics Centre with focus on Next and Third Generation sequencing as well as on diagnostic services.

We are of course aware that this reorganisation may have caused recent problems in shipment and therefore delay in data delivery. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused and we thank you for your understanding and your patience.

We had loads of fun! – as every year at the GATC Christmas party in Constance!

Our sales representatives came from all parts of Europe to GATC Biotech’s headquarters in Constance. Together with all GATC employees, their partners and children, we celebrated our yearly Christmas party.

Peter Pohl, CEO of GATC Biotech, used the opportunity to thank all longtime employees and honored two 10th and one 20th anniversary.

Having a savory roast, various salads and desserts, great vine – and not to forget our traditional Caipirinha – we all enjoyed the cheerful atmosphere and looked back at a successful year.

Also Santa Claus and Knecht Ruprecht (the German Santa’s helping hand) came for a short visit. In change to a poem or Christmas song he had a little present for each child. The tension for the adults rose when heaving the yearly secret Santa and tombola.

We thank all our employees for this successful, cheerful and yummy party and wish all of you a wonderful Christmas time!

Schön war es! – mal wieder auf der GATC Biotech Weihnachtsfeier!

Aus allen Teilen Europas reisten unsere GATC Biotech Außendienstmitarbeiter an, um sich hier in Konstanz gemeinsam mit allen GATC-lern, Partnern und Kindern auf die Weihnachtszeit einzustimmen.

Peter Pohl, CEO der GATC Biotech, bedankte sich an dieser Stelle bei langjährigen Mitarbeitern und beglückwünschte zu zwei  10-jährigen und einem 20-jährigen Jubiläum.

Bei herzhaftem Braten, zahlreichen Salaten und Desserts, gutem Wein – und nicht zu vergessen,  dem zur Tradition gewordenen Caipirinha – genossen wir die fröhliche Stimmung und blickten auf ein erfolgreiches Jahr zurück.

Auch der Nikolaus und Knecht Ruprecht statteten uns einen kurzen Besuch ab. Im Austausch zu einem kleinen Beitrag in Form von Gedicht oder Weihnachtslied war für jedes Kind ein Geschenk dabei. Für die Erwachsenen steigerte sich die Spannung beim alljährlichen Wichteln und der Tombola.

Wir bedanken uns bei  allen Mitarbeitern für die gelungene, lustige und  leckere Weihnachtsfeier und wünschen allen weiterhin eine schöne Weihnachtszeit! 

For many years we’ve had this tradition of the advent calendar for each employee. No one knows its origin or when it had started. Every year on the first of December it is ‘suddenly’ there – and each time we see cheerful and surprised faces looking at this constantly growing and oversized advent calendar.

Where usually a bio-artwork decorates the wall, we now have countless chocolate calendars with Santas, reindeer, and slides welcoming us in the entrance of the GATC headquarter in Constance. Each year the number of calendars rises, today we count 101 calendars with a total of 2424 windows. (There circulates a rumor saying that the old GATC building was only extended in order to have sufficient room and walls for many more chocolate calendars!) Of course our employees in all headquarters in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, England, Ireland, Sweden and Norway did not fall into oblivion! More than 40 advent calendars were spread throughout Europe.

Even though no one knows where all these calendars come from, it is good to know they will be there again next year!

… und jeden Tag 101 Türchen bei GATC in Konstanz.

Schon seit vielen Jahren gibt es bei uns den Brauch des Adventskalenders für jeden unserer Mitarbeiter. Niemand weiß woher er kommt oder seit wann es ihn gibt; jedes Jahr am ersten Dezember hängt er ‚plötzlich‘ da – und jedes Mal sieht man fröhlich, überraschte Gesichter beim Anblick des überdimensionalen Adventskalenders.

Wo sonst Bio-Kunst hängt, schmücken jetzt zahlreiche Schokokalender mit Weihnachtsmännern, Rentieren und Schlitten den Eingang des Hauptsitzes in Konstanz. Jährlich kommen einige Kalender hinzu, heute zählen wir 101 Kalender und insgesamt 2424 Türchen. (Es kursiert sogar das Gerücht, dass das alte Gebäude der GATC ausgebaut wurde, nur um Platz für noch mehr Adventskalender zu schaffen!) Unsere Mitarbeiter in allen Außenstellen in Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, Frankreich, England, Irland, Schweden und  Norwegen wurden natürlich nicht vergessen! Über 40 weitere Kalender wurden europaweit an unsere Mitarbeiter verteilt.

Und wenn auch niemand weiß woher die schokoladenen Kalender eigentlich kommen, ist es schön zu wissen, dass es sie auch im nächsten Jahr wieder geben wird.

Wir wünschen uns allen eine schöne Adventszeit!

A visit to the 3rd Next Generation Sequencing Congress in London was extremely busy and very interesting. The conference had a very indepth program on Next Generation platforms and their applications…

I was lucky enough to enjoy dinner with the Natural History Museum delegates at a pub restaurant. I can only describe it as a nautical maze with portion sizes designed for dinosaurs!  The museum is an amazing place well worth a visit, unfortunately the dinosaurs aren’t decorated with tinsel at Christmas but you can light up dippy in the main atrium!

On a scientific note you can watch the scientists at work in the Darwin Wing hopefully not sequencing, pop along to the GATC labs for that ;o)
