We had loads of fun! – as every year at the GATC Christmas party in Constance!

Our sales representatives came from all parts of Europe to GATC Biotech’s headquarters in Constance. Together with all GATC employees, their partners and children, we celebrated our yearly Christmas party.

Peter Pohl, CEO of GATC Biotech, used the opportunity to thank all longtime employees and honored two 10th and one 20th anniversary.

Having a savory roast, various salads and desserts, great vine – and not to forget our traditional Caipirinha – we all enjoyed the cheerful atmosphere and looked back at a successful year.

Also Santa Claus and Knecht Ruprecht (the German Santa’s helping hand) came for a short visit. In change to a poem or Christmas song he had a little present for each child. The tension for the adults rose when heaving the yearly secret Santa and tombola.

We thank all our employees for this successful, cheerful and yummy party and wish all of you a wonderful Christmas time!

Schön war es! – mal wieder auf der GATC Biotech Weihnachtsfeier!

Aus allen Teilen Europas reisten unsere GATC Biotech Außendienstmitarbeiter an, um sich hier in Konstanz gemeinsam mit allen GATC-lern, Partnern und Kindern auf die Weihnachtszeit einzustimmen.

Peter Pohl, CEO der GATC Biotech, bedankte sich an dieser Stelle bei langjährigen Mitarbeitern und beglückwünschte zu zwei  10-jährigen und einem 20-jährigen Jubiläum.

Bei herzhaftem Braten, zahlreichen Salaten und Desserts, gutem Wein – und nicht zu vergessen,  dem zur Tradition gewordenen Caipirinha – genossen wir die fröhliche Stimmung und blickten auf ein erfolgreiches Jahr zurück.

Auch der Nikolaus und Knecht Ruprecht statteten uns einen kurzen Besuch ab. Im Austausch zu einem kleinen Beitrag in Form von Gedicht oder Weihnachtslied war für jedes Kind ein Geschenk dabei. Für die Erwachsenen steigerte sich die Spannung beim alljährlichen Wichteln und der Tombola.

Wir bedanken uns bei  allen Mitarbeitern für die gelungene, lustige und  leckere Weihnachtsfeier und wünschen allen weiterhin eine schöne Weihnachtszeit! 

Zwei junge Mitarbeiter lernen derzeit bei GATC Biotech in Konstanz. Im September 2011 startete Juliane ihre Ausbildung zur Industriekauffrau, Roman wird bald seine Ausbildung zum Fachinformatiker abschließen.

Unsere Azubis liegen uns besonders am Herzen. Die Ausbildung bei GATC Biotech soll sie gut auf ihr späteres Arbeitsleben vorbereiten und sie in vielen Bereichen lehren und stärken. Die direkte Mitarbeit an Projekten und eine professionelle Betreuung sind daher unerlässlich. Natürlich möchten wir auch den Spaß an der Arbeit wecken. In der „Azubi-Story“ werden unsere Auszubildenden regelmäßig über ihre Erlebnisse, Eindrücke und Fortschritte berichten.

Juliane, du bist jetzt seit drei Monaten bei GATC, möchtest du dich kurz vorstellen?
Ja, gerne. Ich bin 23 Jahre alt und begann im September meine Ausbildung zur Industriekauffrau. Ich bin sehr froh über meinen Ausbildungsplatz bei GATC Biotech, da der Bereich der Biotechnologie ein sehr spannendes Arbeitsumfeld bietet. Da nehme ich die lange Zugfahrt zur Arbeit gerne in Kauf.

In welchen Bereichen wirst du als Industriekauffrau ausgebildet?
Ich gehe zwei Mal pro Woche in die Berufsschule. Während der Ausbildung werde ich sechs Bereiche durchlaufen. Seit September unterstütze ich das Marketing-Team, ab April werde ich im Buchhaltung- und Finanzbereich arbeiten. Weitere Bereiche sind die IT-Abteilung, Kundenservice, Personal und die Interne Verwaltung.

Was sind die ersten Eindrücke deiner Ausbildung bei GATC?
Die Entscheidung eine Ausbildung anzufangen, war für mich genau richtig. Ich wurde sehr herzlich in das Team aufgenommen und fühlte mich direkt sehr wohl.
Der Großteil meiner Aufgaben macht mir wirklich viel Spaß. Ich werde immer gut auf alle Aufgaben vorbereitet und erledige sie dann  selbstständig. Ich habe sogar bereits eigenen kleinere Aufgabenbereiche, die ich selbstständig betreue.

For many years we’ve had this tradition of the advent calendar for each employee. No one knows its origin or when it had started. Every year on the first of December it is ‘suddenly’ there – and each time we see cheerful and surprised faces looking at this constantly growing and oversized advent calendar.

Where usually a bio-artwork decorates the wall, we now have countless chocolate calendars with Santas, reindeer, and slides welcoming us in the entrance of the GATC headquarter in Constance. Each year the number of calendars rises, today we count 101 calendars with a total of 2424 windows. (There circulates a rumor saying that the old GATC building was only extended in order to have sufficient room and walls for many more chocolate calendars!) Of course our employees in all headquarters in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, England, Ireland, Sweden and Norway did not fall into oblivion! More than 40 advent calendars were spread throughout Europe.

Even though no one knows where all these calendars come from, it is good to know they will be there again next year!

We wish a merry Advent to all of us!

… und jeden Tag 101 Türchen bei GATC in Konstanz.

Schon seit vielen Jahren gibt es bei uns den Brauch des Adventskalenders für jeden unserer Mitarbeiter. Niemand weiß woher er kommt oder seit wann es ihn gibt; jedes Jahr am ersten Dezember hängt er ‚plötzlich‘ da – und jedes Mal sieht man fröhlich, überraschte Gesichter beim Anblick des überdimensionalen Adventskalenders.

Wo sonst Bio-Kunst hängt, schmücken jetzt zahlreiche Schokokalender mit Weihnachtsmännern, Rentieren und Schlitten den Eingang des Hauptsitzes in Konstanz. Jährlich kommen einige Kalender hinzu, heute zählen wir 101 Kalender und insgesamt 2424 Türchen. (Es kursiert sogar das Gerücht, dass das alte Gebäude der GATC ausgebaut wurde, nur um Platz für noch mehr Adventskalender zu schaffen!) Unsere Mitarbeiter in allen Außenstellen in Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, Frankreich, England, Irland, Schweden und  Norwegen wurden natürlich nicht vergessen! Über 40 weitere Kalender wurden europaweit an unsere Mitarbeiter verteilt.

Und wenn auch niemand weiß woher die schokoladenen Kalender eigentlich kommen, ist es schön zu wissen, dass es sie auch im nächsten Jahr wieder geben wird.

A visit to the 3rd Next Generation Sequencing Congress in London was extremely busy and very interesting. The conference had a very indepth program on Next Generation platforms and their applications…

I was lucky enough to enjoy dinner with the Natural History Museum delegates at a pub restaurant. I can only describe it as a nautical maze with portion sizes designed for dinosaurs!  The museum is an amazing place well worth a visit, unfortunately the dinosaurs aren’t decorated with tinsel at Christmas but you can light up dippy in the main atrium!

On a scientific note you can watch the scientists at work in the Darwin Wing hopefully not sequencing, pop along to the GATC labs for that ;o)

GATC Biotech will have a booth at the ICHG/ASHG in Montreal.The conference has a very exciting scientific program, so it is worth to come to Montreal- not only to meet GATC Biotech :-)

Illumina just released a new version of its TruSeq DNA and RNA Sample Prep kits which feature 24 unique indexes. The kits enable the pooling of up to 24 samples per lane, which is just perfect for the sequencing of e.g., large numbers of small viral or prokaryote genomes while greatly reducing costs! According to our contact person at Illumina they are already available for order and we should receive the first kits in a couple of weeks. These are great news, as we are already kind of awaiting those kits. Especially since by using the TruSeq v3 Cluster and SBS kits we have been able to tremendously increase our HiSeq 2000 data output and data quality and now produce about 600 gigabases per run.
